Looking to homestead in Las Vegas?

Can You Have Chickens in Las Vegas? What You Need to Know About Zoning Before You Homestead

If you’ve been dreaming about fresh eggs, garden veggies, and a slower, farm-fresh lifestyle—right from your backyard—you’re not alone. Homesteading is on the rise in Las Vegas, but before you buy that coop or start building raised beds, there's one important thing to check first: zoning.

Las Vegas is made up of four separate jurisdictions, and each one has its own rules when it comes to chickens, agriculture, and backyard homesteading. As a local Realtor (and chicken mama myself 🐔), I’m here to break it down and help you find the right property to live out your farm-fresh dreams.

🗺️ First, Know Your Jurisdiction

Las Vegas isn't just one city—your home might fall under one of these four:

1. City of Las Vegas

  • Covers the central and some west side neighborhoods

  • Zoning can allow chickens with proper lot size and coop placement

  • Always confirm lot zoning before purchasing

2. Clark County (Unincorporated Las Vegas)

  • Covers areas like Spring Valley, Enterprise, Paradise, and Sunrise Manor

  • More rural parts of Clark County may allow livestock, but lot size matters

  • Strictest about lot minimums for animals

📞 Zoning Phone: (702) 455-4314

3. City of North Las Vegas

  • Rules vary by zoning district; chickens may be allowed in certain residential areas

  • Double check setbacks and restrictions

📞 Zoning Phone: (702) 633-1537

4. City of Henderson

  • Generally chicken-friendly with the right lot size and setbacks

  • Some areas governed by HOA rules that may override city allowance

📞 Zoning Phone: (702) 267-1500 (Ask for Current Planning/Zoning)

🐓 Why Zoning Matters for Homesteaders

Even if a property looks perfect for a few chickens or a veggie garden, zoning can make or break your plans. Important factors include:

  • The property’s zoning designation (Rural, RS, RE, etc.)

  • Minimum lot size requirements

  • Coop setback rules from property lines or homes

  • Animal noise ordinances (especially for roosters!)

  • HOA rules (which can be stricter than city/county rules)
